Private Eye Jack was the best in the business and everyone knew it. If there was a secret you were hoping to keep hidden, then Jack was the last person you wanted snooping around. If you had thought you were above the law and could get away with anything, then Jack was the man who would prove otherwise.

It was because of Jack's determination and sometimes unorthodox ways of getting to the bottom of things that rubbed people up the wrong way. It wasn't news that along the way in his five year career as a private eye that Jack had made a lot of enemies. What Jack didn't realize was that was one of those enemies was a lot closer to him than he would've liked him to have been.

Jack was working a case - cheating husband, watching the guy, gathering all the evidence that he needed. For Jack, this wasn't the most exciting of assignments for him but Jack was smart enough never to turn down the work, even if it was work that he felt didn't particularly challenge him that much. Jack also knew that even with a seemingly mundane case, there could always been an exciting twist around the corner.

As Jack finished compiling his evidence that he would later give to his client about their cheating spouse, he got a text message. He didn't recognize the number but the message was enough to get his attention. Something from his past or more specifically someone. Someone he didn't expect to hear from again. Someone whom he had not the best of history with.

Jack knew he was being reckless going to meet this person alone without leaving word to anyone else but the curiosity had taken hold of him and he knew he had to see this person one more time.

He went on foot down a couple of block and into an old apartment building. This person had left the door open. Jack hesitated for a moment before stepping inside.

He was alone inside the apartment and cautiously called out for the old 'friend' who had led him here. When it appeared that no-one was coming and Jack was about to leave, someone struck him from behind.

Jack fell to the ground in a heap. The old friend stepped out of the shadows, his face looking down at the unconscious private eye.

"I genuinely didn't think you would come," the old friend said, closing the apartment door and locking it shut. "Your arrogance really has gotten worse. No-one else would allow themselves to fall into such an obvious trap."

When Jack woke up, he found that he was alone again in the apartment. His hands were tied tightly behind his back with purple and green ropes as were his ankles, knees and waist. A strip of purple tape had been placed over his mouth, keeping him gagged. Jack was sitting up and looking around, calling out in frustration before a recording played on a screen as though timed to do specifically when Jack had awoke. That in itself unnerved Jack. Jack looked at the face onscreen of the man he had wronged. A man who thanks to Jack being too good at his job had spent nearly five years in prison. A man who clearly wanted revenge.

The man had recorded what he wanted to say to Jack, cursing Jack for sending him to prison, for ruining his life and his loved ones lives and his potential future. The man had also talked about how in prison that he had been encouraged to forgive but as much as he wanted to do, he could not forgive Jack. The only thing he wanted was revenge. The man also told Jack that the apartment was abandoned and that he was the only currently trapped in it. The man also informed Jack that a bomb was also ready to detonate and that by the time Jack was awake he would have less than five minutes before everything went bang. The man also ended the conversation by stating that he would be long gone should Jack actually manage to make it out of the building alive.

Knowing that time was not on his side, Jack did everything in his power to get himself free. It wasn't easy as his restraints were tightly secured but with a few moments to spare, Jack had just about managed to get himself free. He ripped the tape off his mouth and had managed to find the bomb to defuse it with seconds to spare.

Jack had managed then to leave the building. He had called the police to warn them about his old friend and while Jack could see that the cops were pleased that Jack had been taken down a peg or two, what Jack didn't realize was that his old friend had been watching from afar, as though pleased that Jack had survived the ordeal.

The old friend wanted revenge on Jack but not by XXXX. XXXX would be far too quick. Jack had ruined his life. The old friend intended to do the same. This would not be the last time, the old friend would get the better of Private Eye Jack.
