“Last chance Martin, are you sure that you want to be a Gamma Lambda?”
Freshman Martin looked up at the two seniors who looked so much older and bigger than he did and nodded his head eagerly. “Yes sir, ever since I came to Wilson, I've been hoping—“
“The first thing a Pledge must learn is how to obey. Open your mouth.”
“My mouth—Garghaff…!”
Without waiting for Martin to open his mouth all the way, one of the seniors pushed a ball of rubber sponge between Martin’s teeth. The sponge quickly expanded to push down his tongue and puff out his cheeks and Martin made some frightened sounds into the soft spongy intruder that was already starting to gag him.
“You see, we try to make this as easy as possible,” one of the big seniors smiled at him.
Martin flinched at a sudden ripping sound and his eyes jerked around to see the other smiling senior ripping wide pieces of sticky tape off of a roll. Then one smiling senior held his shoulders while the other smoothed several pieces of the sticky tape all over his sponge-spread lips so that now Martin could hardly move his mouth at all.
“Now you won't even have to talk. You can just nod your head.”
Martin nodded his head and made strange nervous animal sounds behind the tape. He could keep quiet. They didn't need to gag him like this.
“And now we have some nice rope for you.”
One senior spread his big hand over Martin’s chest like he was telling him not to go anywhere while the other senior grabbed Martin’s arms and pulled them back behind him. Then he could feel the soft rope being wrapped tighter and tighter around his wrists and around above his elbows and soon he couldn't move his hands at all and his elbows were pulled together so closely that they were almost touching.
“Now we have a little confession to make,” one of the seniors smiled.
“Yea it might be a couple of hours before we can start your initiation.”
“Richie is still down at the pet store looking for snakes and lizards.”
“And Phil went down to the swamp to look for some tadpoles, moss and leeches.”
Snakes! Lizards! Tadpoles! Leeches! What were they going to do to him? Poor Martin’s heart was already racing and then –
One of the smiling seniors opened a door to show Martin the inside of a crowded closet. “So you're going to have to wait in here.”
Martin shook his head from side to side and made all kinds of frightened sounds behind the sticky tape while he tried to untangle his tongue from the soggy sponge so that he could tell them that he hated small places.
“Don’t worry,” the other senior smiled at him. “There’s plenty of room in there.”
“Yea, we had three Pledges in there just last week and they didn't complain too much.” The two seniors grabbed Martin by his shoulders and pushed him inside the small closet. Then they pushed him down onto his knees while Martin wondered why he had ever been so stupid as to volunteer for this fraternity.
Then the seniors closed the door and Martin lost it completely. Panic grabbed him all over and he started screaming into his gag and pounding the sides of the closet with his feet. Suddenly the door opened.
“What the hell are you doing in here?”
“Yea, are you some kind of wutz or something?”
Both of the big seniors looked really angry. Then one of them grabbed Martin’s legs while the other grabbed some more rope. Then it seemed like they didn't care how much they hurt him while they quickly bound his knees and ankles tightly together.
“Any more noise from you and we'll give you an ice water bath!” The two seniors slammed the door shut on Martin and closed him into the dark space where the only light came from the little cracks around the door.
Martin worked his tongue around the swollen sponge inside his mouth and squeezed out some of the drool to run down his throat while he tried to keep his body from shaking so much and his pounding heart from beating so loud.
Suddenly the closet door opened and Martin blinked his eyes at the bright light that rushed into the little space.
“Something we forgot to tell you,” one of the seniors smiled down at him so sweetly. “One of those Pledges we had in here last week bitched because he got cockroach bites all over his body so you'd better not fall asleep in there.”
Just as suddenly the door closed again and Martin was plunged back into the darkness. Roaches! Why did it have to be roaches? Martin couldn't even stand the sight of those things. His Mom kept a clean house so they never had any problem with them, but Martin had visited other people’s places where they kept those roaches almost like they were pets or something. And, as soon as Martin saw one, he was out the door.
But what could he do if he saw one in here? The way they had him tied up, he could hardly move, and the way the soggy sponge was filling up his mouth now, he didn't figure anyone could here him scream. All he could do was to watch and to try to look everywhere, hoping that he could see those roaches before they got to him and then scare them off somehow.
And that is when the real Gamma Lambda panic really set in.
