Ron Jeffries was a tough editor at a local newspaper, pressuring his staff to go that extra mile for a scoop, to dig a little deeper.
Most of his staff thrived on it and most had the same loose relationship with ethics that Ron did. The more a story could be embellished, the better. The consequences of misleading the public with the truth was not something that Ron lost a lot of XXXX over. Or any at all.
However for every negative action, there was always going to be a consequence and when Ron started publishing stories that were a hit piece on a potential Mayoral candidate, it didn't take long for that candidate to get a little even on the unscrupulous editor.
Ron had stayed late at night when two men broke into the offices of the paper he was adding the final touches to. Ron didn't have time to do anything before his assailants tackled him to the ground, tied and gagged him and brought him away.
Ron was brought to the home of the Mayoral candidate to whom he had taken such an extreme dislike to. The candidate only smirked as he looked Ron up and down, the latter being manhandled by hired goons.
"I really don't know what your issue is with me, Mr Jeffries," the candidate said. "But I'll not have you or your rag of a paper sabotage my good work."
Ron gave him a look to say "try and stop me" before realising that his current predicament was doing just that.
"We'll have to get rid of you without it looking like we had anything to do with it," the candidate said, slowly circling Ron before adding. "Yes, I fear a rather unfortunate fate is to befall you, Mr Jeffries."
Ron did not like the sound of that one bit.
"Put him away for now," the candidate continued. "A secure room where no-one will look for him."
"Yes sir," one of the goons said as they both began to manhandle Ron out of the Mayoral candidate's study. "Come on, Mr Editor. We have a nice place where you can retire before the end."
Ron was left in the basement, tightly bound and gagged to struggle before being told he'd be taken care of in a few hours. He knew his life depended on getting out of there and fast. It took all the strength he could muster but he began to slowly loosen his bonds. Pulling the gag out of his mouth, he knew he had be smart if he was going to get out of this one in one piece.
