             Nicoli was daydreaming in class. English Literature. Boring. The twenty-three year old exchange student from Eastern Europe was enjoying all his new friends. He had been in New York City for only two weeks, but the city was “his.” Beside, his roommate, Tommy, was a native. The two dudes bonded at once. Both we at NYU and had a rental near Washington Square. He had shared his family’s hardships of the past with Tommy. He remembered as a boy the “secret police.” How they had come into his home and took all the males and tied them up. Nicoli was only a boy, but still could feel his anger at the ropes as he struggled to help his brothers and father who were helpless and being tortured for information. He still defiantly had a rope scar on his wrist from where he fought to get free and help his unconscious family. “If I was ever tied up again,” he told Tommy, I would brake free! Nothing can hold me tied. I hope it happens some time” Tommy smiled. He had not told Nicoli he liked tied up games.

            Nicoli needed a brake from the class. Tommy would know a good place to hang out with nice friends and good beer. Nicoli darted from class before it was over and made it to the apartment. It was a town house, with only he and his roomie living in it, a nice part of Greenwich Village, somewhat isolated even for the center of New York City. Nicoli unlocked the door and keyed in the alarm when a hand came around his mouth holding a rag with a bad smell. Nicoli struggled but began to fade out. He heard voices in his native tongue, and could make out the figure of Tommy: bound and gagged. Nicoli fought the rag, but soon there was only darkness.

            He slowly awoke. He felt his head splitting and moved his hands to his brow, but soon found his wrists had been restrained. Feeling with his fingers, he discovered that they had been secured with rope tightly behind his back. He still smelled the odor of XXXX, and as he tried to speak, he realized that the rag that XXXX him out had become a gag preventing him from speaking. As he focused his eyes, he realized that Tommy had been made helpless. His roommate was sitting in a chair. From his angle Nicoli could see that Tommy’s wrists had been roped behind the chair and pulled up high to bind with his bent back neck. His biceps were roped to the chair sides. Tommy was also gagged with a rag, but a second rag was blindfolding him.

We are taking you back home where you and your family will face charges of treason.” Nicoli filled with anger and once again found himself tied up by the secret police. It was like a dream and they produced more rope and began to bind his legs and feet. He began to fight as they pulled his arms behind him and roped off his elbows. “Don’t struggle or your American friend gets it!” Nicoli relaxed his arms as they were tied off, watching his captors trace the barrel of a XXXX around Tommy’s sweat soaked face-Tommy’s chest heaving in the ropes from his fear.
            Nicoli was helpless as his captors finished restraining him. “Now we prepare the box.” “The box????” Nicoli helplessly mumbled. “Yes, Nicoli. See we have a large wooden box. I will tie you up into a little ball. You’ll be XXXXed and put in the box, taken to the airport and by private jet returned home. Your brothers should have been broken by torture when you arrive, and they will have the pleasure of watching you executed! They began to drill air holes in the box. Another rag was placed around Nicoli’s eyes. He heard scuffing sounds, and then all was quiet.

            Nicoli figured his captors had left. He had to break free and save Tommy. Ignoring his blindfold and gag, Nicoli bucked in the ropes. He remembered how, when he was a kid, he endured the pain as he sawed his wrists free. Loosing no time, he once again began twisting his wrists. Slowly, so slowly, yet his fingers finally reached a knot. Fumbling and sweating, he worked the knot and got his wrists free. Freeing his legs he pulled the blindfold off his eyes. The chair with Tommy was gone! Where did they take him? Finally unroped, Nicoli went to the kitchen to get a knife as a weapon where he found Tommy and his two captors sitting around the table drinking beers. At once they began to laugh at Nicoli’s perplexed look.

            “Well you said you could break out of anything you were tied up in? And you wished you had a chance to try. We just wanted to give you a challenge and a little good old USA initiation!” Nicoli soon realized that it was a practical joke. He noticed Tommy’s arms: roped burned. He looked at his own wrists and saw the same. “Yeah, Nicoli, these buddies of mine are XXXXs for hire. Makes cool fun at parties.” Nicoli joined the laughter and the beer. And before the night was over, he and Tommy had been roped, back-to-back, legs bent and tied, and were struggling to get out of a wooden box.
