TREASURE ANYONE?

Professor Carlyle came out of the airport expecting to see a nice car sent for him by the museum. Instead he was suddenly confronted by a dark panel truck. And then instead of a welcoming handshake and a well deserved “Well done.” he was greeted by harsh hands and the ugly snouts of pistols while his body was shoved into the dark truck.
            His captors gave him no chance to resist or to make polite introductions. They just shoved a dark hood over his head and then began tying tight ropes around his wrists, arms and chest until he felt like he was being hugged by a big nasty snake. Then the truck sped off to who knows where. Professor Carlyle prided himself on being a good communicator, but every time he tried to open a dialog with these creatures, his body was poked hard with the steel barrels of their weapons until he learned to remain silent.
            The truck stopped somewhere. The door opened. Then those angry hands grabbed his body and began pushing and pulling him along through a door and then inside to where he was finally shoved down onto his knees on a hard floor. Then those rough hands ripped the dark hood off of Professor Carlyle’s head.

Bright lights stabbed painfully into the Professor’s eyes and added to his complete disorientation. Then he managed to blink the lights out of his eyes and focus his vision again. He was in a bare non-descript room in somebody’s house. And then he looked up at his captors. They were both big burly men dressed in denim pants and pea coats with leather gloves on their hands. Professor Carlyle couldn't see their faces since both men had dark pantyhose masks pulled down over there heads.
            “All right Professor, where is it?” one of the men spoke.
            Professor Carlyle shook his head, shrugged his shoulders and smiled like he didn't have any idea of what they were talking about.
            “Come on! We looked through all your luggage! All you got is a bunch of dirty socks and underwear. Where’s that idol?”
            Professor Carlyle shrugged his shoulders again and tried a larger smile.
            “Okay, you don't want to talk? Fine! We can fix that!”
            Two angry hands grabbed Professor Carlyle by the head until it hurt while two other gloved hands clamped Carlyle’s mouth shut and then began plastering pieces of duct tape over his lips and cheeks until his whole mouth was being held tightly shut by the unyielding layers of sticky tape.

“Didn’t figure you for a tough guy,” one of the burly men said as they dragged his body back into a corner of the room.
            Then both men grabbed him and held him still while they cinched and tied several coils of rope around his ankles. Then the two men laughed like they enjoyed hurting him.
            But those two men had no idea of what real pain was like. Professor Carlyle had just spent three months slogging through tropical jungle and another two months living underground like a hard rock miner, clawing his way deeper and deeper into an ancient burial chamber to find that idol. Then it had taken another month for the Professor to regain enough of his health to make the trip home.
            Did these fools think that he was just going to hand that idol to them?
            “The Boss said we got to keep him alive, but he didn't say nothing about making him comfortable,” one of the burly men growled.
            Then both men came at the Professor with more ropes in their hands.

The Professor didn't even try to resist. It was clear to him that these two men had the advantage now. So he just took his mind into a safe place and succeeded in mostly ignoring the two men while they manhandled his body and tied their ropes tightly around him. And soon the Professor was bent up almost double with harsh ropes pulling at his wrists and ankles and shoulders. But in his mind the Professor was back in a peaceful little grotto that he had found. There was a nice cool pool of water there that was fed by a sparkling waterfall that had an almost musical sound.
            Far off in the distance of his mind, Professor Carlyle heard one of the two bruisers say “We'll just leave him like that for awhile. Once his blood stops flowing he'll be a lot more cooperative.”

Then he heard their laughter going farther and farther away.
            Professor Carlyle didn't care. The idol was in a very safe place and he knew that museum security would be on the job. They always kept an eye on important people who were returning to the museum. So he was sure that they would be along soon to set him free.
            Meanwhile Professor Carlyle was feeling like taking a nice relaxing swim in that cool pool of water.
